America in a Different Mirror: A Comparative Approach to History

Runtime - 41 minutes

Ronald Takaki, Ph.D. presents at the 2007 Teachers College Annual Winter Roundtable at Columbia University.

By 2056, most Americans will be non-white, descendants from peoples of Africa, Asia, Latin America. Today's minorities will themselves have become the majority. Speaking from his book "A Different Mirror", Dr. Takaki argues that diversity has been our manifest destiny from the moment of first contact between the origial inhabitants and the Europeans on the eastern edge of the continent to the present. As counselors and educators, this new way of thinking will have impact on how you view America and how you define what it means to be an American.
