Uncovering the Social Determinants of Health
Runtime - 44 minutes
Lydia Buki, Ph.D. presents at the 2010 Teachers College Annual Winter Roundtable at Columbia University.
Health disparities between various populations are a critical social justice issue, and it is imperative for psychologists to become involved in the elimination of these diparities. To illustrate mechanisms of disparity, Dr. Buki uses breast cancer in Latina women as a model to demonstrate the psychosocial, cultural, and institutional factors that combine to produce lower survivorship rates. Dr. Buki shows us the non-traditional roles that psychologists can take to help combat these disparities, consistent with a social justice perspective.
