Looking Beyond Race, Looking Beyond Borders: Explorations into Multicultural Personality
Runtime - 28 minutes
Joseph Ponterotto, Ph.D. presents at the 2007 Teachers College Annual Winter Roundtable at Columbia University.
How will Americans of all cultures and races adjust to life in an increasingly multicultural, multilingual society? In Dr. ponterotto's award address, he focuses on his evolving theoretical and research model of the multicultural personality. He suggests who will adapt most successfully to our evolving multicultural society, and which personality characteristics predispose one to positive adjustment. This multicultural personality is conceptualized as a narrow personality matrix that reflects comfort in and the ability to negotiate and thrive in a culturally pluralistic society. Related theory and research in multiple disciplines within psychology are reviewed and integrated in an attempt to both define and operationalize the multicultural personality construct.
